As the TCS New York City Marathon approaches, volunteers who are representing Catholic Charities New York are gearing up to run, and Elizabeth Giuffra is one of them. For her, this marathon represents a deeply personal journey that intertwines her passion for running with her commitment to community service. A senior studying politics at Princeton, Elizabeth grew up in New York City, where her experiences shaped her understanding of both physical endurance and social responsibility. Her dedication is further inspired by her father, Robert J. Giuffra, Jr., a long-term supporter and trustee of Catholic Charities New York, whose involvement has instilled in her the values of service and compassion for the community.
Elizabeth’s connection to the NYC Marathon is profound. Growing up, she would watch professional runners glide past her family’s apartment during the race, a sight that sparked a dream within her. “As a kid, I would sit on the windowsill, mesmerized by the energy and spirit of the marathon,” she recalls. “I never imagined I would one day be a part of it.”
In the years leading up to this moment, Elizabeth has cultivated her love for running. She began participating in track and cross country in middle school but stepped back from the sport after facing injuries during her teenage years. The pandemic reignited her passion, as she turned to running for both mental and physical health. “Running became a beautiful way to explore new places and clear my mind,” she shares.
With her sights set on a bigger goal, Elizabeth trained diligently for the Brooklyn Half Marathon in spring 2023. “That experience made me realize I was in the best shape I had been in a long time,” she says. Inspired, she decided to run the NYC Marathon, seeking out a charity that aligned with her values. Elizabeth found a perfect match with Catholic Charities NY, an organization her family has supported for years. “My dad’s side of the family has a strong Catholic background, and the church has always emphasized the importance of giving back,” she explains. “Catholic Charities NY does incredible work, from supporting those experiencing homelessness to assisting immigrant communities. It resonates with my own belief in fostering community.”
Throughout her training, Elizabeth has faced the challenges of long-distance running head-on. “Training on the bridges in New York City is kind of scary at first, but once you get used to it, it’s exhilarating,” she notes. Princeton’s hilly terrain has also served her well, preparing her for the demanding NYC Marathon course, which is known for its inclines. “I’ve done a lot of my long runs here, and it’s helped me build the endurance I need.”
Her training routine is comprehensive. Elizabeth incorporates strength training and yoga, focusing on maintaining her health and avoiding injuries. “I’ve been fortunate to stay injury-free, which has allowed me to remain consistent and excited about my training,” she says.
As Thanksgiving and the holiday season approach, Elizabeth is particularly passionate about the Saint Nicholas Project, which provides warm clothing and food to those in need. “The holidays are such a comforting time for my family,” she reflects. “I want to ensure that everyone feels that warmth and care, especially those who might feel isolated during this season.”
Through her participation in the marathon, Elizabeth aims to raise Catholic Charities NY’s awareness and its mission. “Many of my friends didn’t realize the breadth of work the organization does,” she shares. “I hope to inspire them to get involved, especially since my generation can sometimes be skeptical about organized religion. It’s rewarding to show them the impact we can make through community service.”
Elizabeth Giuffra’s journey to the NYC Marathon is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and resilience. “I’ve felt so much support from my community.” As she trains, she has felt the support of her friends and family, making her fundraising efforts all the more meaningful. With each mile she runs, Elizabeth embodies the hope and support that Catholic Charities NY offer to those in need, reminding us all of the importance of coming together to lift one another up. As you cheer on the marathon participants, keep an eye out for Elizabeth and other Catholic Charities New York runners, who are not just running a race but also building bridges of support and understanding for those they serve.
