On February 24, 2025, Catholic Charities gathered in Albany, NY, for its Annual Advocacy Day, uniting representatives from 14 agencies and 6 dioceses across New York State to amplify the voices of the communities they serve. The day began with a detailed overview of the New York State Budget, presented by NYS Budget Director Blake Washington. His remarks provided crucial context on fiscal priorities and the challenges facing the upcoming budget cycle, setting the stage for the advocacy work that followed.
Following the briefing, Catholic Charities hosted a reception where leaders and advocates had the opportunity to engage directly with New York State legislators. A total of 38 legislators attended the reception, including prominent state officials such as Governor Kathy Hochul and NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. These conversations provided a vital platform for building relationships, sharing stories, and reinforcing the importance of Catholic Charities’ mission in shaping compassionate and effective public policy.
The momentum continued the next day as Catholic Charities delegates held more than 40 meetings with state legislators and key staff members. Delegates met with representatives from the Assembly Ways & Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, and many others. These meetings focused on key legislative and budget priorities, emphasizing the urgent need for continued support for human services, affordable housing, mental health programs, and protections for vulnerable populations.
In addition to direct advocacy, delegates distributed over 150 copies of Catholic Charities’ 2025 New York State Policy Agenda. This document outlined critical issues facing communities across the state and offered clear, actionable solutions for lawmakers to consider. By providing legislators with this resource, Catholic Charities reinforced its role as a partner and advocate for the common good.
Catholic Charities Advocacy Day 2025 demonstrated the power of collaboration, faith, and civic engagement. It was a strong reminder that through persistent advocacy, relationship building, and a commitment to justice, real change is possible for individuals and families in need across New York State.
