Why Creating (or Updating) Your Will Should Be on Your To-Do List and How It Can Support Catholic Charities of New York

Why Creating (or Updating) Your Will Should Be on Your To-Do List and How It Can Support Catholic Charities of New York

When life is busy, it’s easy to put off long-term planning.  But one task that shouldn’t wait is creating or updating your will. A will is more than just a legal document, it’s a powerful way to protect your loved ones, express your values, and ensure that your legacy reflects what matters most to you.

Here’s why taking the time to create (or review) your will is one of the most important things you can do:

1. You Decide What Happens to Your Assets
Without a will, state law decides how your assets are distributed and those decisions may not align with your wishes.  A will ensures your money, home, possessions, and even treasured keepsakes go to the people and causes you care about most, like Catholic Charities of New York.

Many of our supporters choose to include a charitable gift in their will to Catholic Charities of New York, helping us continue our mission of serving the most vulnerable in our community for generations to come.

2. You Choose Who Cares for Your Children
If you have minor children, your will allows you to name a guardian, someone you trust to raise them if you’re no longer able to.  Without this, the courts make that decision.  Naming a guardian is one of the most loving and protective steps a parent can take.

3. You Can Reduce Family Conflict
During a time of loss, confusion can quickly lead to conflict.  A clearly written, legally valid will removes uncertainty and helps prevent disputes among your loved ones.  It’s a way to leave clarity, and peace, behind.

4. You Can Name an Executor You Trust
Your will allows you to appoint an executor, the person responsible for carrying out your wishes.  This trusted individual will manage your estate, pay outstanding bills, and ensure that everything is handled efficiently and with integrity.

5. It’s Simpler Than You Think
Creating a will with the help of an attorney is often more straightforward and affordable than people expect.  And once it’s done, you’ll gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing your affairs are in order, no matter what the future holds.

Your Legacy Can Lift Lives

When you include Catholic Charities of New York in your estate plans, you create a lasting legacy of compassion, dignity, and hope.  Your support helps feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, strengthen families, and advocate for justice, long into the future.

Whether you’re creating your first will or updating an existing one, we encourage you to consider how your legacy can reflect your faith and values.
