This Veterans Day, Catholic Charities NY proudly joins the nation in honoring the courage, commitment, and sacrifices of our military veterans. Today, we spotlight the inspiring journey of Walter R. Hayden, a U.S. Army veteran whose transition from military service to selfless volunteer work exemplifies the resilience and dedication we celebrate on this special day.

Walter served his country during the Desert Storm era, stationed at Camp Casey in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division. As an Army mechanic, Walter’s responsibilities were crucial: “I worked on vehicles ranging from Humvees to tanks and rocket systems,” he recalls. “You name it, we did it.” His service far from home laid the foundation for the veteran status he proudly holds today.

After returning from military service, Walter found a new mission—one that continued his commitment to helping others. Through the Bronx Vet Center, Walter was introduced to Part of the Solution (POTS), an agency of Catholic Charities NY dedicated to fighting poverty and hunger. POTS provides vital services to those in need, offering nutritious meals, social services, and a supportive community.

Walter became a volunteer, starting in the kitchen and gradually expanding his involvement to the food pantry and the Dignity and Wellness program. This service, which offers showers, haircuts, and grooming essentials, provides a sense of dignity and hope to many in the Bronx. “We serve so many people,” Walter says. “Anyone who walks through those doors is treated with respect—no matter their age, race, or background.”

For nearly three years, Walter has been a constant presence at POTS, giving his time before, during, and after the pandemic. He helps with everything from meal distribution to assisting people with mail services and SNAP benefits, all while upholding the values that were instilled in him both as a soldier and a person of faith.

“My core values are selfless service and mission first,” Walter reflects. “Catholic Charities has always been there for people, and I want to be part of something bigger than myself. My Army training and my Catholic faith have taught me the importance of serving others.”

As we observe Veterans Day, Catholic Charities NY extends a heartfelt thank you to veterans like Walter R. Hayden. His unwavering commitment to service, both in the military and in his community, is a powerful reminder of the true meaning of selfless sacrifice. Walter’s story highlights the strength and generosity of our veterans, and the enduring impact they have on the lives of others.

Today, we salute you, Walter. Thank you for your service—both on the frontlines and in your community. You are a true example of the power of resilience, the strength of unity, and the importance of giving back.
