Running the Race of Compassion: How the NYC Marathon and Planned Giving Fuel the mission of Catholic Charities of New York

Every November, the streets of New York City pulse with the energy of tens of thousands of runners taking on the TCS NYC Marathon.  Among them, a small but mighty group of 16 individuals will be running not just for personal triumph, but for purpose.  These remarkable athletes are part of Team Catholic Charities of New York, dedicating every mile to supporting the St. Nicholas Project, a vital initiative that provides winter clothing, food, and counseling to women and children facing poverty and hardship in our city.

Last year, our marathoners raised over $70,000 to bring warmth, stability, and hope to hundreds of vulnerable families.  This year, they lace up again with even greater resolve.  But while they carry the mission forward on the pavement, there’s another, quieter race being run, one that invites each of us to take part in a legacy of enduring compassion.

A Marathon of Mercy – Through Planned Giving

Just as it takes planning, perseverance, and heart to run 26.2 miles, it takes the same qualities to build a legacy that lasts.  That’s why Catholic Charities of New York has partnered with FreeWill and MyCatholicWill.  They are trusted, free tools that make it easy to include Catholic Charities of New York in your estate plans.

By making a planned gift, you’re not just supporting today’s needs, you’re ensuring that Catholic Charities of New York can continue walking alongside New Yorkers in need for generations to come.  It’s a powerful way to go the distance, even if you’re not running the race yourself.

Why Your Legacy Matters

This past winter, the St. Nicholas Project transformed countless lives, providing not just coats and boots, but dignity and belonging.  One mother, who recently arrived in the city with her children, shared how receiving winter essentials helped her feel seen, supported, and safe.  Your planned gift helps make stories like hers possible, year after year.  Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines, volunteering at a water station, or considering your legacy, your participation matters.
