Prom Clothing Giveaway Brings Joy to Washington Heights Youth

Catholic Charities NY Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center lit up with excitement on April 26, 2025 as it hosted its 3rd Annual Prom Clothing Giveaway, turning an ordinary afternoon into an extraordinary one for local high school students preparing for prom — a major milestone in any teen’s life.

The event welcomed dozens of young people from across Washington Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, offering free prom dresses, suits, accessories, handbags, and makeup to help them step confidently into one of the most celebrated events of their school years. For many, this was more than just a chance to dress up. It was an opportunity to be seen, celebrated, and supported by their community.

For students like Adrianna, the giveaway provided access to prom essentials that might otherwise be out of reach. The costs associated with prom, including attire, tickets, transportation, and accessories, can add up quickly, creating real obstacles for families managing tight budgets. Catholic Charities’ initiative helps break down those barriers, ensuring that no student has to miss out on prom because of cost.

“It means a lot to me, honestly,” shared Ravine Raipen. “This is a great opportunity to find prom suits for kids who can’t get prom suits by normal means. And I’m one of those kids, so I’m happy just to be here.”

Ravine heard about it through SYEP, NYC’s summer jobs program offering paid work and career experience to youth ages 14–24. “I applied to work through this branch of Catholic churches, and they sent me an email. I’m taking advantage of it.”

“And we could connect with the community and all,” said Cassandra Pascual, another first-time attendee. “We already know a lot of people here.”

The event wasn’t just about providing prom clothing to students, it was about uplifting them and giving them hope, a core part of Catholic Charities NY’s mission. The Prom Clothing Giveaway affirmed that every young person deserves to be celebrated as they step into the next chapter of life.

“This is my first prom too,” said Justin Jaikaran, who found out about the event through a friend at school. “It’s amazing for the community, and I think it’s just amazing to see people help each other. What you all are doing is good. I think it’s a great experience to have.”

As students were looking through numerous dresses and suits to find what they were looking for at the Cultural Center, they carried more than just clothing. They carried the message that they are seen, valued, and worthy of celebration.

Catholic Charities believes in the empowerment of young people by allowing them the chance to experience prom alongside other teens. Through events like the Prom Clothing Giveaway, Catholic Charities continues to fulfill its mission of service and dignity, reminding every young person that they are not alone and that their community is here to lift them.
