“Is there a need that we can meet?” For Debra Presti, that question guided her 16-year career at Catholic Charities. As she retires, she leaves behind a legacy of service rooted in compassion, empathy, and a commitment to social justice.

Throughout her career, Debra focused on meeting the needs of the most vulnerable populations, from asylum seekers to families facing housing instability. Her work was grounded in a deep belief in the dignity of every individual. “The asylum seekers taught me how to live better,” she reflects. “Their resilience and determination reminded me of the strength of the human spirit and kept me grounded.”

Debra’s career was marked by creative problem-solving and innovation. She played a vital role in expanding housing support services, navigating complex immigration challenges, and supporting youth struggling with mental health issues. Her ability to connect with individuals from all backgrounds was a hallmark of her work, and she always emphasized the importance of respect.

The most difficult clients often carry the deepest shame and vulnerability. Respect is the foundation for building trust and helping them move forward.

As a leader, Debra championed a culture of kindness and collaboration. She understood the importance of creating a supportive environment for staff, fostering resilience during times of high demand. Her leadership was instrumental in helping Catholic Charities navigate challenges while maintaining its commitment to quality care.

Her advice to colleagues reflects the values that guided her journey: “Attach yourself to good people. Be kind, work hard, and don’t take the opportunity for granted.” She also stresses the importance of balancing kindness with accountability, knowing when to pivot and take decisive action.

Now, as she transitions into retirement, Debra plans to focus on her health and family. Although Debra will be stepping away from full-time work, she intends to stay connected to Catholic Charities through consulting opportunities. “I’m not done yet,” she says with a smile.

Debra humbly downplays the idea of leaving behind a legacy, but her impact is undeniable. Her work has touched countless lives and strengthened Catholic Charities’ mission. “I’ve always tried to do my best, and I hope that’s what people remember,” she says.

As Catholic Charities continues its mission, the compassion and dedication that defined Debra’s career serve as a guiding light. Her work reminds us that real change happens when people come together to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. With your support, we can continue this vital work.
