A Planned Giving Checklist for Catholic Donors

Planned giving is one of the most meaningful ways to express your Catholic faith, not only during your lifetime, but for generations to come. As stewards of God’s gifts, we are called to care for others, protect what has been entrusted to us, and help build a more just and compassionate world. Through planned giving, you can support your loved ones and leave a lasting impact on the mission of Catholic Charities of New York.

At Catholic Charities of New York, we see every day how transformative these gifts can be, from feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, welcoming immigrants, caring for seniors, and uplifting families throughout the Archdiocese of New York. Your legacy can be a lifeline for someone in need.

If you’re considering including Catholic Charities of New York in your estate plans, here’s a helpful checklist to guide your discernment:

1. Reflect on Your Values and Intentions

Start with prayer. What matters most to you? Which ministries or causes, like Catholic Charities of New York, have moved your heart, caring for the poor, advocating for justice, or supporting families in crisis?

Consider:

  • What legacy do I want to leave behind?
  • How can my Catholic faith be reflected in my giving?

2. Take Inventory of Your Assets

You don’t need to be wealthy to make a lasting gift. Many types of assets can be used for planned giving, including:

  • Cash or savings
  • Retirement accounts (IRA, 401(k), pensions)
  • Life insurance policies
  • Real estate
  • Stocks or appreciated securities

Even a small portion of an asset, like 5% of a retirement account, for example, can create profound change when directed to a trusted mission like Catholic Charities of New York.

3. Choose the Right Gift Structure for You

There are many flexible ways to structure a planned gift based on your goals:

  • Bequests: Name Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York in your will or trust.
  • Beneficiary Designations: Designate us as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or life insurance policy.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities: Receive fixed income for life, with the remainder going to Catholic Charities of New York.
  • Donor-Advised Funds or Trusts: Customize your giving strategy while supporting long-term impact.

We’re here to help you explore these options and find the one that best aligns with your intentions.

4. Talk to Your Loved Ones

Sharing your plans with family ensures clarity and unity. It’s also a chance to explain why your Catholic values inspired your gift, and how you hope it will continue Christ’s mission long after you’re gone.

5. Consult with Your Financial or Legal Advisor

A professional advisor can help you align your philanthropic goals with your financial and estate plans. Be sure to provide them with our official name and suggested bequest language:

“I give [% of my estate / $ amount / the residue of my estate] to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, a nonprofit organization located at 488 Madison Avenue, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10022, for its general charitable purposes.”

This ensures your generosity is directed exactly as you intend.

6. Notify Us of Your Gift (Optional but Deeply Appreciated)

If you’ve already included Catholic Charities of New York in your estate plans, thank you. Letting us know helps us honor your intentions, recognize your generosity, and welcome you into our Legacy Society, a special community of faithful donors who are building a more merciful future.
