On May 11, 2026, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York hosted the 40th Annual Archbishop’s Open, which brought 224 competitors to Winged Foot Golf Club. The event raised over $1.3 million for New Yorkers in need, setting a new record for this annual fundraiser, and was attended by the newly installed Archbishop of New York, His Excellency Ronald A. Hicks.

For weeks, rain had been forecast for the day of the Archbishop’s Open. But when it arrived, not a drop fell on the East or West Courses of Winged Foot.

“Someone in this room called me and asked me to pray for a good day. And I did,” said Archbishop Hicks at the dinner reception. “I took that prayer seriously. I asked God for a good day because this is an important day for what we do in his name. And the Lord came through, gave us a beautiful day. So right now, I want to make sure in front of all of you, I thank God.”

Sean Egan, Partner at the event’s presenting sponsor, KPMG, co-chaired the event with Jim Donaghy, Executive Chairman of the STO Building Group. The two led the Golf Committee, a group of Catholic Charities of New York trustees and allies whose collective efforts ensured the event ran smoothly, and that tickets completely sold out to avid golfers.

“What makes tonight an important night is that we’re here for a purpose,” said Egan. “Catholic Charities is one of the most impactful organizations in New York, serving individuals and families across the city when they need it most. Whether it’s providing food, shelter, counseling, or simply a pathway back to stability, the work touches lives every day, in a real way.”

Egan recalled the beginning of KPMG’s partnership with Catholic Charities of New York, established in the 80s by Lead Partner Mike Moran, now carried forward by Managing Partner Bob Garrett, who continues a legacy of philanthropy that has totaled millions of dollars in support for the most vulnerable, as well as consistent, hands-on corporate volunteerism.

Catholic Charities of New York’s CEO, J. Antonio Fernandez, also celebrating his first golf fundraiser with the organization, spoke to The Good Newsroom about the honor of welcoming Archbishop Hicks and other supporters.

“We are humbled and honored that Archbishop Hicks is joining us,” said Fernandez. “And while the donors see and know about the work of Catholic Charities, today, they get to speak with the Archbishop, and with us, creating an even deeper connection to the Archdiocese.”

“This is not just generic fundraising,” said Archbishop Hicks. “These are real people that we’re helping. There are people who don’t have a home, and we’re providing them with housing. There are people who are hungry—families, children—and we’re providing them with food. There are people who just lost their home and all their possessions in a fire, and in those moments, there’s Catholic Charities, being the face of Christ, being the face of compassion.”

Catholic Charities of New York thanks KPMG, event co-chairs James K. “Jim” Donaghy and Sean Egan, our Golf Committee, and all who contributed to making this milestone event a success. We look forward to welcoming you back next May!
