Honoring Women’s History Month: Beatriz Diaz Taveras, A Leader in Service

Honoring Women's History Month Beatriz Diaz Taveras, A Leader in Service
Beatriz Diaz Taveras

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we recognize the extraordinary contributions of women leaders who have dedicated their careers to uplifting vulnerable communities. One such leader is Beatriz Diaz Taveras, who has served as Executive Director of Catholic Charities Community Services of the Archdiocese of New York since 2008.

Throughout her tenure, Beatriz has guided the agency’s response through nearly every crisis that has confronted New Yorkers, including the housing crisis, Superstorm Sandy, the opioid epidemic, and ongoing immigration reform challenges. Under her leadership, Catholic Charities Community Services has provided critical support to individuals and families facing hardship, ensuring that those in need receive access to essential services.

A Lifelong Commitment to Service

“I’ve always believed in giving back,” Beatriz reflected. Raised in a deeply Catholic family, she was immersed in faith and service from an early age, actively participating in her parish’s outreach initiatives. When a friend encouraged her to apply for a role at Catholic Charities, she embraced the opportunity—setting her on a path of service and advocacy that continues to shape lives today.

Leading a nonprofit in a sector where women often face challenges has not always been easy. “In my early years, people would ask me, ‘Who’s the man behind you? Who’s the priest behind you?'” Beatriz recalled. “But I made it clear—I am the Executive Director. I am the person you speak to.” Establishing credibility and ensuring she was taken seriously were hurdles she faced, but through persistence and confidence in her leadership, she has broken barriers and become a key advocate for the communities Catholic Charities serves.

Championing Women’s Needs and Social Justice

While Catholic Charities Community Services provides aid to all individuals in need, Beatriz acknowledges that many social issues disproportionately impact women.

“So many women are affected by issues of food insecurity, housing instability, and financial hardship,” she explained.

Our food pantries, case management services, and eviction prevention programs provide vital assistance to families, and often, it is women who come seeking help for their children.

One pressing issue she highlighted is diaper insecurity. “We recently advocated before the City Council for increased support for diapers because they are a necessity that cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits,” she explained. “It’s a basic need for mothers and families that often goes overlooked.”

Additionally, Catholic Charities Community Services plays a key role in helping women secure housing and financial stability. “Many of the women we serve are the backbone of their families,” Beatriz said. “They are working multiple jobs, taking care of children, and still struggling to afford rent. Through our programs, we help them access financial assistance, avoid eviction, and find stable housing solutions.”

Inspiration and Advice for Future Leaders

When asked about the women who have influenced her, Beatriz honored Carmen Villegas, a mentor who played a pivotal role in her journey. “She wasn’t a well-known figure, but her unwavering faith and fight for women’s roles within the Church inspired me,” she said. “She believed in advocating for change, and that commitment shaped my own path in leadership.”

For young women looking to make a difference in social services and community advocacy, Beatriz’s advice is clear: stay the course.

You will encounter difficulties, injustices, and moments where it feels like change isn’t happening fast enough. But remember, you are here for the greater good.

A Legacy of Service

Looking ahead, Beatriz envisions Catholic Charities continuing to evolve and meet the needs of the community in real time. “One of our greatest strengths is that we don’t have to wait for government funding to act,” she said. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can pivot resources to meet urgent needs as they arise. That’s what makes our work so impactful.”

As she reflects on her years of service, Beatriz remains committed to the mission that has guided her for so long: ensuring that Catholic Charities remains a pillar of support, compassion, and advocacy for all who turn to it in times of need.

As we honor Women’s History Month, we celebrate Beatriz Diaz Taveras—a leader whose resilience, faith, and dedication to service have transformed countless lives. Her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
