Sister Mary Irene Fitzgibbon and two other Sisters of Charity opened their convent’s doors in 1869 to save babies abandoned on the streets of New York. This act of charity in the devastating wake of the Civil War began the legacy of the New York Foundling.

During the past 144 years, the Sisters’ ministry continued to evolve from a respite home for abandoned children to a comprehensive spectrum of community support services designed to empower vulnerable children and families in New York.

Services include foster care, group residences for teens, maternity, family reunification, adoption and prevention services. They also include child day care and residential services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

The organization continues to reflect the founders’ core belief that no one should ever be abandoned and that all children deserve the right to grow up in loving and stable environments.
