On February 8th, Catholic Charities New York commemorates the Feast Day of St. Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of human trafficking victims.
St. Josephine’s story is one of unimaginable suffering and remarkable redemption. Sold into slavery as a child in Sudan, she endured years of cruelty before finally gaining her freedom in Italy. After embracing Christianity and religious life, she dedicated herself to serving others, living out the values of dignity, compassion, and hope.
Her life is a reminder of the power of faith and perseverance—a story that resonates deeply with Catholic Charities New York’s mission to serve the most vulnerable in our communities.
Catholic Charities: Protecting the Vulnerable, Restoring Dignity
At Catholic Charities New York, we provide critical support to those facing hardship, including survivors of trafficking, domestic violence, and homelessness. Our work ensures that people in crisis—regardless of their circumstances—find safety, stability, and a path toward a better future.
Through emergency assistance, case management, legal services, and housing support, Catholic Charities helps individuals reclaim their dignity and rebuild their lives.
As part of Catholic Charities New York’s agency federation, Covenant House New York, plays an important role in this work by serving youth experiencing homelessness, many of whom are at high risk of trafficking and exploitation. Their services provide safe shelter, emotional support, and trauma-informed care to young people in crisis.
As Dr. Shakeema North-Albert, CEO of Covenant House New York, describes:
Our young people have faced incredible hardships, from human trafficking to family abandonment. The services we provide help them overcome obstacles and begin to heal—whether through case management, housing, or creative programs like our music studio, which allows them to process their trauma in a therapeutic space.
Our work with homeless services, legal aid, and resettlement assistance helps ensure that survivors and at-risk individuals receive the support they need to reclaim their independence.
