Catholic Guardian Services recently celebrated the grand opening of Harmony Hub, a Family Enrichment Center (FEC) in the Fordham Heights community. The center is a vibrant, co-created space designed by the community, for the community. Its name, Harmony Hub, was chosen through a democratic process, with community members participating in paper ballots, online surveys, and town hall discussions to ensure the space truly represents their collective vision.

The Mission Behind Harmony Hub
As a Family Enrichment Center, Harmony Hub operates under Catholic Guardian Services’ Family Support Services umbrella. Catholic Guardian is known for providing essential programs, including foster care services, domestic violence support, parenting resources, and preventive programs. Harmony Hub extends these efforts by creating a welcoming and collaborative space where families can engage in meaningful programs that address their needs.

Catholic Guardian Services is one of the many agencies within the Catholic Charities NY federation, working together to serve vulnerable individuals and families across New York. At Catholic Charities NY, we are dedicated to providing social services, housing assistance, immigration legal aid, food pantries, and disaster relief to those in need. Our programs aim to promote dignity, stability, and opportunity for all, regardless of background or faith.

Through our network of agencies, we support children, seniors, refugees, homeless individuals, and families in crisis. Melissa Mejias, Director of the Family Enrichment Center at Harmony Hub, emphasized the importance of community involvement: “Our goal was to ensure that everyone felt a part of this process. We didn’t just create a center—we created a home where families feel empowered to shape their own future.”

A Grand Opening to Remember
The grand opening event of Harmony Hub was a joyous occasion, attended by nearly 100 community members, local officials, and faith leaders, including Catholic Charities NY Executive Director, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan. The celebration featured local catering from Bronx staples such as Valencia Bakery, Barrio Restaurant, and Tosso’s Italian Pastry, ensuring that the event honored the flavors of the neighborhood.

A highlight of the event was the official name reveal, where children from the community proudly unveiled the Harmony Hub banner. Attendees also witnessed a ceremonial ribbon cutting, featuring a blue ribbon instead of the traditional red, symbolizing a fresh and unique approach to community enrichment.

Monsignor Kevin Sullivan shared his thoughts on the significance of Harmony Hub:

Catholic Charities is proud of the efforts of Catholic Guardian Services to develop the Bronx Family Enrichment Center to empower families with the resources and support they need to thrive. I was invigorated to see the enthusiasm of the families, parents and children who gathered to celebrate the opening of the Harmony Hub. This is another step in building stronger families, brighter futures, and a more compassionate neighborhood.

Melissa Mejias reflected on the significance of the day, stating: “Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces, from our kids to our seniors, was a reminder of why we do this work. Harmony Hub is a testament to what happens when a community comes together.”

The event was filled with warmth and laughter as families gathered, children played freely in designated areas, and guests enjoyed live music and engaging speeches. A special opening prayer and blessing set the tone for Harmony Hub’s mission of fostering a safe, welcoming, and uplifting space for all who enter.

Community Impact and Future Programs
Since its opening, Harmony Hub has already begun hosting diverse programs for all ages, from infants to seniors. Recognizing the high Spanish-speaking population in the area, the center is prioritizing culturally relevant resources, including Know Your Rights sessions, legal aid consultations, and bilingual educational programs.
