The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a vital initiative that provides young individuals with the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience, explore various career paths, and develop essential professional skills. Through a broad range of placements—from physical therapy clinics to positions with the Marines, local precincts, doctors’ offices, supermarkets, life insurance agencies, and real estate firms—SYEP empowers youth to discover what truly resonates with their passions and aspirations.
One standout example from this year’s program is the opportunity provided to students interested in the medical field, particularly through a placement in physical therapy. This specific clinic within SYEP offered participants a unique six-week immersion into the profession, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and valuable insights into a potential career in healthcare.
Adrian Polanco, the Bronx coordinator for SYEP, plays a key role in matching students with opportunities that align with their interests and career goals. His approach goes beyond simple placements; Adrian is constantly seeking innovative ways to expose young people to new possibilities. “I’m always looking for new ways to uncover opportunities for these students,” he shares.
The physical therapy clinic placement is a prime example of Adrian’s commitment to finding meaningful opportunities for students. For many young people interested in medicine, this experience was transformative. It provided them with the practical experience needed to make informed decisions about their educational and career paths.
For example, Brianna Carrington, who chose physical therapy as her focus, said, “I want it to be my major in college. The experience here has been invaluable, and my next step is to apply for an internship next summer.” This targeted, interest-driven placement not only confirmed Brianna’s passion for physical therapy but also provided her with the hands-on experience necessary to pursue it as a career.
While SYEP offers a wide variety of placements, it’s these specialized, interest-driven opportunities that often have the most significant impact on participants. First-time participant Favour Ogeeide was surprised by the range of choices available, noting, “I thought they would place me wherever, but knowing I had options and could choose what I wanted to do was eye-opening.”
At Catholic Charities, it’s a privilege to witness the growth and development of these students. Programs like SYEP allow young people to gain both personal and professional skills that prepare them for a successful future. Nilsa Rivera, Manager of the Bronx Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center, reflects on the program’s impact: “Seeing these students grow, return, and share the impact Catholic Charities has had on their lives is immeasurable. It not only aids my business aspirations but also fills me with hope and gratitude.”
The continuation of this important work relies on the support of generous donors like you. Your contributions to Catholic Charities help sustain programs like SYEP, ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to thrive and excel in their chosen careers.
