Catholic Charities issued the following statement today in response to the Biden Administration’s announcement that it would withdraw the government’s case to defend the Trump Administration Public Charge Rule: “We are pleased with the administration’s decision to withdraw Trump Public Charge Rule and reinstate guidance that has been in place for over 100 years. The Trump Public Charge Rule created a wealth test to exclude low-income immigrants from becoming residents and to discourage immigrants with status from receiving assistance they were entitled to. Catholic Charities joined in this case as a plaintiff because we believe that human dignity and opportunity should not be determined by net worth and economic status. We have long opposed rules that arbitrarily exclude individuals from legalizing, unfairly separate families, and selectively disadvantage the vulnerable; a wealth test for noncitizens seeking permanent resident status or entry to the United States did just that. We applaud the Biden administration for withdrawing this appeal.”
