As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize and honor the legacy of resilience, leadership, and service embodied by historical figures like Pierre Toussaint. A former enslaved person who became a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, Toussaint dedicated his life to uplifting others, particularly within the Catholic community of New York. His commitment to faith, education, and service continues to inspire new generations through the Pierre Toussaint Scholarship Program, an initiative of the Archdiocese of New York.
Catholic Charities NY had the privilege of speaking with several Pierre Toussaint Scholars recently during the UJA Partner Organization: Repair the World activity at the Jewish Community Center of Harlem, where volunteers packed essential kits to support local community members and contribute to Repair the World’s mission of addressing urgent needs in Harlem. This event brought together 10 scholars from the Archdiocese who actively engaged in service and demonstrated how the program is shaping their lives and communities.
A Commitment to Community and Growth
Catholic Charities NY has long upheld its mission to serve all people in need, regardless of their faith background. Rooted in Catholic values, the organization extends its support to individuals of all religions and walks of life, reflecting an interfaith commitment to compassion, dignity, and service. The Pierre Toussaint Scholars embody this mission by volunteering extensively with Catholic Charities NY, engaging in various outreach efforts that benefit both Catholic and non-Catholic communities alike.
Edward Recker, a freshman nursing major at the University of Mount Saint Vincent, shared how the program has strengthened his connection to his community. “Without it, I honestly don’t know how much I’d be giving back—or if I’d be giving back at all,” he reflected. Beyond financial support, the scholarship has fostered a network of peers who have guided him through his transition from high school to college.
Carol Riaz, a sophomore at Fordham University, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the program has provided more than just financial assistance. “It has been more of a mentorship and friendship opportunity,” she said. “This program built for me a relationship with God.” Through community service projects like assembling hygiene kits for the homeless, Carol sees her involvement as an extension of her faith and commitment to service.
Education, Mentorship, and Faith
For many scholars, the program has been instrumental in shaping their academic and professional aspirations. Cherilyn, a freshman at Columbia University, highlighted how it opened doors to mentorship opportunities in pre-med programs. “It allowed for opportunities to know more about programs I didn’t know about before,” she noted.
Similarly, Curtis Yall, a senior at the Universtity of Mount Saint Vincent, described the Pierre Toussaint program as a “family” that fosters a deep sense of support and belonging.
We rely on each other and help each other out when we need it.
Michael Guerrero, a freshman at Stony Brook University and Harlem native, described how the program has impacted both his professional and personal growth. “It’s more than a scholarship—it’s a mentorship and companionship program,” he explained. “I feel like I’m growing closer with God, my community, and even myself.” His dream of becoming a physicist is being nurtured through mentorship, particularly through workshops with professionals such as Dr. Adolph.
The Power of Community and Service
Brianna, a senior from the Bronx, and Tyler, a second-year master’s student from Harlem, both highlighted how the program fosters leadership and service. Tyler shared:
I’ve not only gotten deeper and more connected in my faith, but I’ve also been more involved in my community. It’s taught me how to be a better leader and how to be more impactful and more effective in the world that we live in today.
Brianna emphasized that the service component of the program drew her in. “Learning to always step in and take action is what makes this program stand out.” She recalled a memorable experience making buttons for children as part of a community service project.
The scholars actively participate in retreats that strengthen their faith and friendships. Tyler, who has attended every retreat since 2019, described them as opportunities to hear inspiring speakers and gain new perspectives on faith in action.
Through their ongoing volunteer efforts, the scholars also serve extensively within Catholic Charities NY, helping to stock food pantries, distribute clothing, and assist individuals and families facing hardship. Their dedication underscores the interfaith mission of Catholic Charities—helping all those in need, regardless of faith, background, or circumstance.
A Lasting Impact Beyond College
The mentorship aspect of the program plays a critical role in scholars’ development. Tyler explained, “There are so many people willing to help. Having mentors pass down wisdom and advice has been invaluable.”
The program extends beyond financial support, fostering a lifelong community of leaders. As Tyler put it, “This is not a program of entitlement, but of service. It allows you to be the leader you’re meant to be. It’s more than just financial aid—it’s a community program, a leadership program. Even after you graduate, you have people in your corner.”
Looking ahead, scholars like Brianna and Tyler are committed to careers that serve others. Brianna, a biomedical engineering student, aims to develop medical solutions for underserved communities. Tyler, studying mental health counseling, hopes to establish a private practice offering affordable care and integrate mental health ministries into community centers and churches.
Honoring Pierre Toussaint’s Legacy
As these scholars demonstrate, the Pierre Toussaint Scholarship Program is more than financial aid—it is a pathway to leadership, service, and faith-driven growth. Their stories reflect the enduring spirit of Pierre Toussaint himself, who believed in the transformative power of education and community support.
During Black History Month, we honor the past while celebrating the young leaders shaping the future. Through their commitment to service, faith, and academic excellence, the Pierre Toussaint Scholars continue to uphold a legacy of leadership and positive change in their communities.
