Founded in 1993, Abraham House provides a holistic, family-based program of services to offenders and their families, and other families who struggle to cope with poverty, violence, crime, and lack of essential services. Located in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx, Abraham House works with the Courts to offer first-time offenders an Alternative to Incarceration -- a home where they can turn around their lives and learn to become responsible citizens. At the same time, Abraham House provides their families, and other families from Mott Haven, with crisis management, counseling and referrals through its Family and Pastoral Center. This program offers a place of community and hope to those who feel isolated and overwhelmed. Eligible children attend Abraham House’s After School Program, which provides a quality academic program and a safe haven during the hours when they may be unsupervised and most risky behavior takes place. The objective of all activities is to strengthen families and the larger community -- a community which has been described as a pipeline to prison -- so that opportunities to break the cycle of incarceration occur at many points. In 2018, over 4.2 million young people experienced homelessness of some kind. Every year, more than 5,000 of these young people lose their lives to the streets. For over 45 years, Covenant House New York (CHNY) has been a leader in providing residential services to vulnerable homeless, runaway, and exploited youth. As the largest provider of runaway and homeless youth services in New York City, CHNY serves over 1,900 young adult ages 16-24 annually with an operating budget of over 25 million dollars. Our doors are open to all young people who need help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. We facilitate our services using trauma-informed principles to help homeless youth leave the streets and achieve independence. We also advocate for systemic change through public policy while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness. Covenant House New York’s mission is to help each young person find safety and refuge from the dangers of living on the streets. Founded and incorporated in 1896, Jeanne d'Arc Residence is administered by the Sisters of Divine Providence, Kentucky. The Residence provides temporary residence for 140 women of various nationalities, cultures and religions with limited means. For over a century, the sisters have provided a safe, temporary and affordable residence for women in a Christian environment. Many of the women are working towards degrees and/or pursuing professional careers. Many are immigrants; some are US citizens. Opportunities for spiritual, cultural, human enrichment are offered in an effort to promote personal growth and to develop a greater appreciation of the various religions, cultures and ethnic background of residents. KCC provides high quality education services to young children with developmental delays, in partnership with families and communities. Our child-centered, evidence-based instruction prepares each student to enter the New York City public school system in the least restrictive environment possible. Our Purpose, Our Cause Lay Apostolic Ministries with the Poor (LAMP) is made up of persons of all ages and walks of life who share the Catholic faith and share the call to serve through a ministry of presence and faith evangelization. We are called together by the Holy Spirit to move with Jesus and Mary’s compassionate heartbeat for the materially poor in the greater New York City area. Through God’s grace working in LAMP, countless people have come to know Jesus and His love, and their lives have been transformed. Reminding them of God’s personal love, we help them rediscover their own dignity and goodness, enabling them to begin taking responsible steps in bettering their condition. We support and strengthen the spiritual lives of the people we meet through evangelization and personal faith sharing. As missionaries, we learn from fellow LAMP missionaries, but we also learn from the people we serve who often teach and convert our own hearts. Serving the poors makes us spiritually stronger and reminds us of God’s love to properly fulfill our missions. Who Are We? We are a community of Catholic lay adults who share the calling to serve and love the materially poor with the message of Jesus’s love. We live together in community and share a devotion to daily mass, prayer, and living out our faith through service of others. Comprising both single men, women and married couples, our missionaries experience this call to a full or part-time commitment of at least one full year to assist in materially poor parishes, serve with homeless families and evangelize at other sites of poverty. What We Do? We reach out to individuals who are suffering in different ways through our five ministries. With each ministry having its own focus, we are able to connect with those we are helping on a deeper level and form unique connections. The mission and purpose of the Lavelle School for the Blind is to provide students with visual impairments the skills and training necessary for them to reach their fullest potential in life. The School offers a full range of individualized special education services, supports, and resources to allow students to grow and maximize their independence. We place an emphasis on functional academics, skills in daily living, social interaction, fine and gross motor development, recreation and leisure, use of assistive technology, sensory efficiency, self-determination, as well as prevocational and work ready skills. We educate the whole child through a combination of developmental and functional strategies. All students are prepared for lives as respected adults. Located in Bronx, New York, the Lavelle School for the Blind is a multi-cultural educational institution committed to teaching and training students with visual impairments and additional disabilities. Founded in 1904, Lavelle School for the Blind was originally a Catholic institution, based on the Catholic tradition and the compassion and dedication of the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt. In 1942, Lavelle became one of several state-funded schools for the blind and deaf, supported by the New York State Education Department. As a private, state approved and supported institution, Lavelle School for the Blind educates approximately 150 enrolled students annually from all five New York City boroughs as well as surrounding school districts outside of New York City. Students may enroll as early as age 3 and can continue until age 21. The School offers three unique educational programs based on the needs of the students. The Preschool and Early Childhood Program is for students with disabilities ages 3-6, with or without visual impairments. The Life Skills Program is for students with visual impairments and moderate to severe cognitive disabilities ages 6-21. The REACH Program is for students with visual impairments and mild to moderate cognitive disabilities ages 6-21. All Lavelle students have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that is designed to meet his/her specific needs and abilities. In all of our programs, students benefit from the experience and expertise of staff who focus on helping students develop and grow to the best of their ability. These certified teachers along with qualified therapists collaborate on planning and implementing effective, individualized education programs. LEFSA was founded in 1986 by Sr. Dorothy Gallant, SC and Sr. Teresa Skehan, RSM in order to create faith communities with people who are homeless. LEFSA fills a critical void for those in the city shelter system and on the street, who are offered a cot and perhaps a meal without the spiritual support necessary for climbing out of severe poverty. Since then, LEFSA has touched over 3,000 lives annually and continues to expand its care and programs. LEFSA is a ministry and a community, made up of people who have been there—many of our team members were formerly homeless and have now devoted their lives to helping others. LSA Family Health Service has been operating in El Barrio / East Harlem since 1958. But our roots go back to 1891, when the first Little Sisters of the Assumption arrived here from Paris to nurse the “sick poor” in their own homes with respect and dignity. New Hope Manor, is an 820 residential substance abuse treatment program licensed by the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. Our Barryville, NY location offers services to those who need Stabilization and Rehabilitation. We offer Reintegration services in Poughkeepsie, NY. Sacred Heart Residence for Women is administered by the Congregation of San Jose de la Montana. This Catholic order was founded by Blessed Petra de San Jose in 1881. In New York City, our Residence provides temporary lodging to women 18 to 30 years old. Stays of longer than one month must be renewed at the end of each month. The Administration reserves the right to accept older women. Women under 18 must be accompanied by a mother or guardian (at least 25 years old) for the length of their stay. t. Agnes Residence, conducted by the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity, provides a temporary home for young professional women and students. Being in the heart of New York City, our residence offers a home and the chance to experience and escape the hustle and bustling streets of this city. Saint Agnes Residence can be easily reached by bus, subway or taxi, there are several churches, shopping facilities, educational and recreational centers nearby. We are a ministry of the Daughters of Mary of the Immaculate Conception and we are open to women of all faiths and national origins. With approximately 100 women who now reside at St Agnes, these women represent all countries, cultures and religious beliefs. Saint Anthony Shelter for Renewal is a private, non-profit overnight shelter in the South Bronx for men who are over 18 years of age and clean of drugs and alcohol. Our newly renovated six-story facility houses 30 guests. Guests can stay for up to 6 months, during which they are provided with an individual room, showers, dinner and breakfast. What sets us apart from other city shelters is our focus on “Renewal.” We seek to empower men to recover from substance abuse issues and other personal crises through a small, structured, communal environment with individual attention and a focus on personal responsibility. We provide men with more than just a bed – we offer them the guidance they need to rebuild their life. The Dwelling Place of NY, a sponsored ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY, is a privately-funded 15 bed transitional residence for homeless women located in Midtown Manhattan. At the time of its founding, Sister Nancy Chiarello and four other members of the Allegany Franciscans were nurses working at St. Clare’s Hospital in Manhattan. From their apartment nearby the hospital they would see homeless women searching through their garbage cans looking for food. This heartbreaking scene compelled the sisters to ask their congregation for approval to open a shelter for homeless women who were becoming more numerous and visible in the Times Square/Midtown area. With the support of their congregation and Cardinal Cooke, the archdiocesan building located at 409 W. 40th Street became “home” for many women beginning in October of 1977. The ministry of The Dwelling Place has evolved over the years to meet the ever changing face of homelessness. Yet its mission remains steadfast, to offer safe shelter and individualized care, support, and guidance to homeless women as they build a sustainable, self-supported life-style. Members of several other religious congregations continue to serve alongside the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at The Dwelling Place in response to the needs of homeless women and to advocate for compassionate and just services for the most vulnerable in our society. The Leo House is a nonprofit Catholic guesthouse dedicated to offering affordable and temporary accommodations. Over 30 years ago, the Tolentine-Zeiser CLC began with programs for Senior Citizens in the area. Over the years, the needs grew, and so did our programs. Today, we provide services to approximately 2,000 people every year. Many of our clients pay what little they can for services. However, state and local funding, as well as grants and donations from people like you allow us to provide for the men, women and children in our neighborhood who are most at need. Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center provides affordable child care, homeless, HIV/AIDS, and immigrant services for over two thousand Bronx residents. Xavier Mission is a FOR-IMPACT organization providing basic services as well as opportunities for empowerment and self-sufficiency to New Yorkers in need. Founded in 1900, the Xavier Society for the Blind is a Jesuit directed apotolate located on East 23rd Street in Manhattan. The Xavier Society serves nearly 10,000 blind, deaf-blind, visually impaired and print-disabled persons in the United States and Canada. Xavier Society for the Blind provides free Catholic spiritual and inspirational reading materials and lending library services in Braille, large print and audio CD formats. Guided by a prophetic faith, YMPJ's purpose is to transform both the people and the physical infrastructure of blighted South Bronx neighborhoods and change the systems that negatively impact them. Founded in 1994, the mission of Youth Ministries for Peace & Justice (YMPJ) is to rebuild the neighborhoods of Bronx River and Soundview/Bruckner in the South Bronx by preparing young people to become prophetic voices for peace and justice. We accomplish this through political education, spiritual formation, and youth and community development and organizing. Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) has as its goal the leadership development and formation of young people for a life of peace and justice. We have found that the key to a successful youth development program is to be able to engage youth and inspire them to leadership through civic participation, while remaining attentive to their multiple developmental needs.
