Fathers play a quiet yet powerful role in shaping the lives of their families and communities. At Catholic Charities of New York, we honor the men who show up every day—offering guidance, protection, and love, often in the face of great hardship. Whether they are fathers by birth, mentorship, or circumstance, their presence builds stronger families and creates a ripple effect of care that reaches far beyond the home.
Across the ten counties we serve, we witness the many faces of fatherhood. There is the dad working multiple jobs to provide for his children, the grandfather stepping in as caregiver, or the man seeking a second chance after hardship—determined to reunite with his family and build a better future. These individuals come to us during moments of vulnerability, and we are honored to accompany them with dignity and compassion.
As Pope Francis once reflected, “Every family needs a father, a father who shares in his family’s joy and pain, hands down wisdom to his children, and offers them firm guidance and love.” Though Pope Francis is no longer with us, his words continue to inspire us to value fatherhood not just as a role, but as a daily act of love and service. Under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, that vision of accompaniment and inclusion remains central to the Church’s witness in the world.
Fatherhood is not about perfection. It is about being present. It is found in a listening ear, a protective hand, and a voice of encouragement. At Catholic Charities, we strive to reflect this same spirit in all we do. Whether helping a parent secure affordable housing, providing job training, or offering legal aid to keep families together, our mission is to support and uplift those who are doing their best to care for others.
We also look to the example of our Heavenly Father, whose love is constant and whose mercy has no end. His presence is a source of strength in times of uncertainty and a model of compassion in a world that often turns away from the most vulnerable. His call to love our neighbor inspires our daily work, reminding us that no act of kindness is too small and no person is ever forgotten.
As we reflect on the fathers in our lives and in our communities, we give thanks for their quiet courage and daily sacrifices. Their stories may not always be told, but their impact is lasting. By supporting them through housing assistance, job training, legal aid, and family services, Catholic Charities helps ensure they have the tools to provide stability and hope for their loved ones. We celebrate their efforts, stand with them in their journeys, and wish all fathers a peaceful, joy-filled Father’s Day.
