Frequently Asked Questions about

Donating IRA Gifts to Catholic Charities of NY

IRA stands for individual retirement account. This is also known as an individual retirement arrangement by the IRS. This is a long-term, tax-advantaged savings account that individuals with earned income can use to save for the future.

There are a few types of individual retirement accounts (IRAs). Retirement-plan benefits can include assets held in individual retirement accounts (IRAs), 401(k) plans, profit-sharing plans, Keogh plans, and 403(b) plans. There are a few types of IRAs. This can include traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) IRAs, and Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRAs.

A charitable gift from your IRA can go further toward helping to continue our lifesaving work and carry out our mission of providing help and creating hope for all New Yorkers in need, both non-Catholics and Catholics alike.

First, it is not considered taxable income. Second, it can count towards your required minimum distribution (RMD) starting at age 73. That means contributing money towards your retirement either reduces your taxes on income for the year or eliminates the taxes from your retirement money.

You need to be 70½ or older at the time of the gift, and you can contribute up to $105,000 each calendar year. Distributions must be made by your IRA custodian directly to Catholic Charities of New York, without the funds ever being withdrawn by you. We recommend initiating your IRA gift anytime, and no later than early November so that your gift arrives before December 31, to count toward this tax year.

You can start by contacting your IRA custodian and request an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to be made to Catholic Charities of New York.

Our Tax ID is 13-5562184. Depending on the institution, you may be able to complete your QCD request online.
