Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice

Providing help and creating hope for New Yorkers in need by supporting parishes and community-based groups

The Campaign for Charity and Justice is an initiative run by Catholic Charities to
revitalize, increase, and support works of charity and justice initiated by
parish and community groups within the Archdiocese of New York.

Building a More Just and Compassionate Society

Funds raised through the Campaign provide grants to parish and community groups to further the social ministry of the Church in the Archdiocese of New York.

Awards are made to projects that are founded on the core Catholic belief in the dignity of each person, as made in the image of God, and seek to advance Catholic Charities’ mission to build a more just and compassionate society.

Featured Grantees

Grantee: St. Charles Borromeo, Resurrection/All Saint (SCBR)

Funded:  Parish-based racial justice project, food pantry assistance, and Emergency Cash Assistance Project (ECAP).

Purpose: Increase the parish’s commitment to explore, address, and change how racism impacts faith and action among Catholics in the Archdiocese of New York. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, Breonna Taylor’s murder, and subsequent efforts to expose and address institutional racism, our parishes seek to implement changes to eliminate the vestiges of racism within the Catholic Church.

Grantee: The National Mobilization Against SweatShops (NMASS)

Funded: Provision of Emergency Cash Assistance  low-income and laid off workers who do not qualify for other forms of assistance, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: Multi-racial, multi-trade, membership run and community based, workers’ center, founded in 1996. The Center organizes workers, immigrants, and citizens against exploitation. A majority who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 with existing health issues that are a result of their working conditions. Many of those receiving assistance are considered essential workers – such as home care and service workers. Others assisted were laid off during the pandemic and ineligible to receive government benefits

Grant Categories:

Parish Social Ministry Initiatives: Grants range from $2,000 to $10,000 each to parishes, clusters of parishes or deaneries to support and promote initiatives of outreach, organizing, service and ministry.

Community & Economic Development Projects: Grants range from $20,000 to $40,000 to support efforts to address the root causes of poverty, through organizing and/or advocacy, with the hope of empowering low-income people, and change problematic structures and barriers in their communities. Grants can also support initiatives that engage the poor and vulnerable in creating decent jobs and/or develop assets that will be owned by or benefit local communities.

Applicant Qualifications:

  • Must be 501(c)3 not-for-profits or have a 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor
  • Must not support or promote activities that contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church nor use grant funds to support or oppose political candidates
  • Should seek to significantly involve those impacted in directing the project
  • Must operate and conduct funded services within the Archdiocese of New York

Eligible Activities Include:

Protecting & Nurturing Children & Youth
A parish in Orange county provides diapers, baby formula and other necessities to lowincome families along with referrals for other essential services.

Feeding the Hungry & Sheltering the Homeless
A parish in Westchester coordinates volunteers and transportation to secure shelter for the homeless during the winter.

Strengthening Families & Resolving Crises
A parish in the Bronx is working to help families maintain stability, providing temporary relief and eviction prevention assistance so that moments of crisis do not cause families to spiral deeper into trouble.

Supporting the Physically & Emotionally Challenged
A parish in Manhattan provides outreach, fellowship, and assistance to adults with demential along with support for their familes.

Welcoming & Integrating Immigrants & Refugees
A faith-based community organization works to empower, educate, and involve the community through educational workshops, civic engagement, and local outreach to assist immigrants obtain assistance and needed services.
