As temperatures across the state continue to climb, with the heat index reaching beyond 100°F, Catholic Charities of New York remains committed to supporting our neighbors in need. To keep our seniors safe during this extreme heat, we’re launching a new summer cooling program, Project Cool.
Through this initiative, we are providing free fans to eligible older adults over 60 years old while supplies last. Distributions will take place at the Cardinal Spellman Center in Lower Manhattan, our South Bronx Center, the Kennedy Center in Harlem, and other locations.
Extreme heat is especially dangerous to seniors. It is our responsibility to ensure that their needs are met, and that they live in safety and dignity.
Tips to Keep Your Home Cool
- Use your new fan from Catholic Charities to circulate air and create a cooling breeze.
- Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, especially on windows that receive direct sunlight.
- Open windows early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
- Avoid using the oven or stove during the hottest hours of the day. Instead, prepare simple meals that don’t require cooking.
- Turn off lights and unplug electronics when they are not in use, as they generate heat.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. (As we get older, our ability to detect our thirst decreases.)
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours.
