Casita Maria was originally named the Elizabeth Seton League, Inc. after St. Elizabeth Seton, the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. It became the first charitable organization to serve the Hispanic Community in New York City.

The agency incorporated in 1936 to give recently arrived Hispanic families the support they needed to thrive in their new homeland. Over time, Casita Maria expanded its programs to include homeless services, drug rehabilitation, violence prevention, gang intervention and teen pregnancy prevention.

Its Bronx-based programs focus on arts and education. These include in-school and after-school programs, summer camps and internships that serve more than 1,400 neighborhood youth. Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education recently launched a new library and reading program for children in need. The program, created with the help of Catholic Charities volunteers, enriches Casita’s services in the South Bronx while engaging local teenagers in volunteerism. Casita Maria Community Support also provides services for homebound seniors in East Harlem.
