Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice Grant Categories

The Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice provides grants to parish and community groups to further the social ministry of the Church in the Archdiocese of New York. These grants are built on the core Catholic belief in the dignity of each person as made in the image of God, and seek to advance Catholic Charities' mission to build a more just and compassionate society.

Grant Categories:

The Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice will have two grant programs:

Parish Social Ministry Initiatives: Parish Social Ministry grants will range from $2,000 to $10,000 each to parishes, clusters of parishes or deaneries to support and promote charity and justice initiatives of outreach, organizing, service and social ministry.

Community & Economic Development Projects: Community & Economic Development grants will range from $20,000 to $40,000 to support efforts to address the root causes of poverty, through direct organizing and/or advocacy, with the hope that low-income people will be empowered, and change problematic structures and barriers in their communities. Community & Economic Development grants can also support initiatives that engage the poor and vulnerable in creating decent jobs and/or develop assets that will be owned by or benefit local communities.


  • Applicants must be 501(c)3 not-for-profits or have a 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor
  • Applicants must not support or promote activities that contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church nor use grant funds to support or oppose political candidates.
  • Applicants should seek to significantly involve those impacted in directing the project.
  • Applicants must operate and conduct funded services within the Archdiocese of New York

Examples of Activities Eligible for Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice Grants

These examples are organized into the Catholic Charities five main program areas:

Protecting & Nurturing Children & Youth 

  • A parish in Orange county provides diapers, baby formula and other necessities to low-income families along with referrals for other essential services. 

Feeding the Hungry & Sheltering the Homeless 

  • A parish in Westchester coordinates volunteers and transportation to secure shelter for the homeless during the winter. 

Strengthening Families & Resolving Crises 

  • A parish in the Bronx is working to help families maintain stability, providing temporary relief and eviction prevention assistance so that moments of crisis do not cause families to spiral deeper into trouble. 

Supporting the Physically & Emotionally Challenged 

  • A parish in Manhattan provides outreach, fellowship, and assistance to adults with demential along with support for their familes. 

Welcoming & Integrating Immigrants & Refugees 

  •  A faith-based community organization works to empower, educate, and involve the community through educational workshops, civic engagement, and local outreach to assist immigrants obtain assistance and needed services.
