Walk, Run or Ride to Raise Money for Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties

By Jim Sliney Jr

Starting on Sunday July 12th and running (pun intended) through July 26th, the very first Virtual Duathlon is being held to raise money for the Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties (CCCSOS) programs. You can join easily and your contributions can have serious impact. Read on to find out how.

WHY DO THEY NEED FUNDS?

Need did not begin with the coronavirus, but while New York State was on PAUSE, need only grew. Food and housing insecurity have grown common. Isolation and joblessness have grown too. The physical, financial, mental and spiritual needs of the people have required incredible effort by the CCCSOS, who have been busier than ever. Staff and volunteers have met the incredible challenge, delivering services in new ways with innovation and dedication.

But answering that ever-louder call for assistance is why the programs and services that have helped so many are in need of your support.

WHY A VIRTUAL DUATHLON?

Peer-to-peer fundraising relies on and nurtures community development. The people who need the services can actually play a role in raising the money for them. The people who deliver the services likewise play a role, and of course there is room for more capable donors to participate (especially now, since in person galas are off limits).

The Ulster county Catholic Youth Organization’s director, Walter Gaceta, has been eager for this. During the pandemic he’s been operating a “Virtual Couch to 5K” program that has been remote-training youth, free of charge, with workouts. And they are ready to run.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

“All the proceeds (of the Duathlon) will go towards supporting programs such as our food pantry along with providing shelter for the homeless and helping those in overcrowded living situations,” said Gaceta. “We are making sure that families have supplies to care for their babies and ensuring that individuals working towards recovery have the supplies and safety they require. We are also providing counseling to those who are having difficulty coping with the anxiety caused by Coronavirus-related issues.”

REGISTER THROUGH ACTIVE.COM AT WWW.TINYURL.COM/CCMILESFORCHARITY

You can run/walk/ride any time on any day during the period of July 12-26, but whenever possible everyone should move together and use the hashtag #VirtualMilesforCharity.

BUT I CAN’T RUN, WALK OR BIKE

That’s okay. You can join a Team! Teams are 10 or more people registering individually. So, you can register to support your Runner, or Walker, or Biker. The money all goes to the same place.

Good luck to all who participate. Let your friends and family know you’re doing it so they can cheer you on! The cause couldn’t be more important.
