2 Min Read: A recent Win and HarrisX survey of 1,002 New Yorker’s revealed that, despite recent opposition to new homeless shelters in the City, most residents support a shelter opening in their neighborhood. The poll showed that 59% of the respondents said that they would “somewhat support” or “strongly support” new shelters, while 40% are against new shelters. The poll also revealed that despite being for or against new shelters in their neighborhoods, 92% of New Yorkers believe that more needs to be done to serve this population. According to New York City's Department of Homeless Services, there are more than 58,500 people in the city shelter system each night. That is a population greater than White Plains, NY and Niagara Falls, NY.

“Until now, we thought there was a huge amount of controversy around solutions to the homelessness crisis,” Christine Quinn, president and CEO of Win, said in a press release. “New Yorkers don’t agree on much, but the poll shows that New Yorkers believe we should do more to solve the problem of homelessness and they are willing to do their part, in their own neighborhoods.”

Other policies supported in the poll included providing supportive services, including career counseling for families leaving homeless shelters so they do not need to return as well as providing tax incentives for employers who train and hire homeless and formerly homeless parents. And about 805 respondents were in favor of raising the value of vouchers that are used by homeless families to pay rent.

“It is heartening to hear that so many New Yorkers understand and support the need for more shelters for our homeless neighbors,” said Giselle Routhier, policy director at Coalition for the Homeless.

The poll's margin of error is 3.4 percentage points.
