Christmas in July? Must be the Saint Nicholas Project

2 Min Read. During the month of July, you just might be able to put some “goodwill towards Man” in the bank for Christmas.

Kmart and Sears are partnering with Catholic Charities of New York to bring you “31 Days of Giving” -- an opportunity for shoppers to purchase winter coats now (yes, we know it’s like 95 degrees outside) for those in need. Prices are under $5! Even Shop Your Way Rewards members can pitch in by shopping online from a list of essential items at ShopYourWay.

Okay, that’s a fair question. Truth is, programs like these require a lot of planning and if we want to put coats in the hands of our neighbors when it’s cold out, its best to buy them while it’s still warm out. Don’t want to be stuck without a coat in an unpredictable New York November. Prices are better too, so your dollars go further.

If it’s still hard to imagine the miracle of giving in the middle of a New York summer, then you’ll just have to trust Lakisha Morris, the program director of the Saint Nicholas Project.

“As we see every day, the needs of struggling families with children, the working poor, frail seniors and other residents in our communities continue to grow. We know all too well that despite hard work and even having more than one job, many New York residents still don’t earn enough to pay for the basic necessities (food, shelter and utilities). Catholic Charities wants to help the families we serve have one less thing to worry about and ensure that they have a cheerful holiday season!”

  • Visit Kmart at Astor Place or The Bronx Coop, or visit the Sears Welcome Center in White Plains and connect with a Personal Shopper. They can help you.
  • Ask your cashier how you can donate to Catholic Charities during the month of July.
  • Log on to your Rewards account and visit the 31 Days of Giving Registry.

If you’ve already done it, tell your friends about it. If you haven’t done it yet, you are in for a very satisfying experience. Either way, tell others about it and use the #31DaysofGiving hashtag.

The Saint Nicholas Project provides thousands of needy New York families (regardless of religion) with winter clothing and other supportive services throughout the year. It includes:

  • St. Nicholas Project Shopping Days – like the whole month of July! (#31DaysofGiving)
  • Adopt-A-Family (registration for which will open in Fall 2019)

Remember…need has no season!
