On July 19th, Catholic Charities' Homebase program hosted the “2nd Annual Family Day Event” in the Soundview section of the Bronx. Children received free book bags, school supplies, food, entertainment, and games. “Everything is free to service the community and the children,” said a housing specialist at Catholic Charities’ Homebase.

If you thought the heat wave would stop these families from participating in this block party, you thought wrong. Friday, July 19th brought mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the low 90; however, with the heat index — which accounts for humidity — the temperature reached close to 105 degrees. A heart of emergency was issued, the New York City Triathlon was canceled for the first time ever, trains broke down, and thousands were left without electricity, but there was a large crowd from the beginning and the numbers only increased as the event continued.

The street was filled with different carnival activities and a variety of food options. Kids were running around and playing and everyone was in great spirits.

This event was for the community and at no cost so people could come and enjoy the day and spend time with one another. A volunteer from the Church of Jesus Christ said, “This is what our church is all about. Events like this one makes us feel better about our services and ourselves.”

Activities included slides, carnival games, a bouncy house, airbrush tattoos, and upbeat music with a speaker on stage to engage the crowd. The speaker said, “I can see that the streets are filled with joy. Education is important and that’s why we do what we do.” During the event, the speaker referred to many great services and resources Catholic Charities provides and how important it is for people to come together.

Catholic Charities' Homebase program helps families by addressing the multiple and complex issues which are the root cause of financial crisis. Catholic Charities is dedicated to strengthening families and resolving crisis through comprehensive Case Management, Financial Counseling, Tenant Eviction Prevention Workshops, Employment Services, and Advocacy – no matter what the weather is like.
