Adopt-A-Family: Bringing Cheer to New Yorkers in Need

by Catherine Kirch

While for many, the holiday season conjures images of cozy fireplaces, warm cocoa, and plentiful gifts, other families struggle to access basic winter necessities like hats, coats, and scarves.

The St. Nicholas Adopt-A-Family program serves hundreds of underprivileged families every year, as the needs of struggling families with children, the working poor, frail seniors and other neighbors continue to grow. Many New York residents don’t earn enough to pay for basic winter necessities like heat or warm clothes—and the holidays can stress already tight budgets.

Through the Adopt-A-Family program, Catholic Charities assists these families in receiving gifts for the holidays, including cold-weather essentials like coats and gloves.

How to Get Involved

You have the option to adopt families ranging from one to eight members. Once you fill out the online participation form, Catholic Charities will match you with a family based on your capacity.

Once you agree, a description of the family and their needs will be sent to you. Then, go shopping for your family and drop your gifts at a Catholic Charities New York location near you. Catholic Charities volunteers will deliver the gifts to your adopted family.

If you don’t have time to shop, that’s okay, too. If you cannot adopt a family this year, you can still help by making a monetary donation to purchase gifts for our families this winter season. To donate, please visit this website.
