Summary: The Government & Community Relations Intern will support the Public Policy priorities managed and coordinated by the Director of Government and Community Relations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manage annual department events and all logistics related to these, including Caucus, Somos, Advocacy Day, Policy Speed Dating, etc.
  • Coordinate meetings and representation that build and strengthen our relationships with elected and public officials
  • Create and maintain a yearly calendar highlighting key events and important policy decisions and our participation, fact sheets, and other relevant materials
  • Work with the Senior Policy Analyst to research and provide analysis on policy issues surrounding poverty, human services and non-profits
  • Support staff in the preparation of position papers, quotes and testimony related to public policy positions
  • Attend legislative/budget hearings and meetings with legislative leaders/public officials
  • Attend meetings/conference calls on as needed basis with stakeholders and coalitions
  • Provide support to the government relations department, and public policy projects as assigned
  • Prepare meeting packets/agendas
  • Support staff with several administrative duties

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Friday. Additional hours may be required to meet program deadlines.

Working conditions and physical demands required:

The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Travel at least 20% of the time using public transportation or vehicle, traverse city streets, occasionally ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Remain stationary using a computer at least 60% of the time, in meetings and/or events.
  • Carry a laptop to offsite work locations.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment i.e. copier, fax, scanner, postage machine and printer.
  • Ability to use and respond to phone calls.
  • Ability to lift and file documents in cabinets.


Education and/or experience required:

  • Current undergrad or graduate student with public policy and government interest and knowledge.

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Good time management skills are a must.
  • Ability to respond to communications and assignments with little advance notice, a plus.
