Summary: The International Center provides educational programming for newly arrived immigrants and refugees with the goal of improving learners' English proficiency and communication skills. Programming includes daily ESOL classes at multiple proficiency levels, citizenship preparation classes, computer skills classes, individual conversation practice, and specialized off-site community programming for vulnerable communities throughout the city. The incumbent will develop, design, and deliver thoughtful and effective classes for learners in daily ESOL and/or ESOL-Citizenship Preparation classes at the main Center and in community-based classes around the city.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Course Development and Instruction: In coordination with the Director of Programs, design and deliver year-long (July-June) ESOL courses. Create thorough and well-developed class curricula focusing on communicative competence for immigrants. In line with the current pedagogy, content will be meaningful and relevant to students' self-sufficiency outside the classroom.
  • Manage and Support Students: Hold weekly office hours for students to ensure they are working toward their identified goals. Work with other Center staff and additional CCCS services to address student needs outside the classroom. Conduct participant intake, assess language proficiency, and identify goals. Provide ongoing support to promote learning, engagement, and retention. Work one-on-one with participants as needed. Conduct bi-monthly workshops based on student needs such as: study skills, financial literacy, higher education options, and job readiness.
  • Training and Staff Development: Assess professional development needs of other instructors and volunteers, and develop and deliver monthly or bi-monthly workshops accordingly. Provide pedagogical support and act as a resource to other instructors and volunteers.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: track and analyze attendance, learner feedback, class surveys/needs assessments, qualitative narrative evaluation, and assist with reporting for grants/funders.
  • Additional Support: Provide general administrative and program support for the Center including assisting with student registration, pre- and post-testing students using BEST Plus, assisting with class scheduling, and maintaining student portfolios and files. Substitute as an open class instructor as needed.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5 PM Monday - Friday. Additional hours may be required to meet program deadlines, or client needs.

  • Remain stationary and/or ambulate for the duration of instruction and presentations, addressing and/or monitoring students.

Qualifications

Education and/or experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, ESOL or related field; Masters preferred.
  • Experience working with multi-level adult ESOL learners in various contexts.
  • Experience with BEST Plus preferred.
  • Previous experience working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience with community outreach a plus.

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:

  • Highly motivated and self-starter.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy (expertise with Office Suite and Google Drive).
  • Ability /willingness to work evenings and occasional Saturdays.
