Summary: Reporting to Alianza Cultural Center ' s Director, this position is responsible for overall exhibition design and the development of visual displays process for the Cultural Center, including two ambitious folk and special art projects for intergenerational audiences within the Washington Heights community. With a dual goal of this ambitious initiative of high­ quality arts programming and community engagement, the skillset and experience of an enthusiastic Curator is vital to its success. Under the tutelage of the Cultural Center Director, the Curator will lead the implementation of all visual arts projects. The Activity Specialist-Arts Curator will manage aspects associated with the production of exhibitions and other events involving visual art elements and displays from planning and designing artwork layout for exhibitions, coordinating the utilization of walls/spaces/color/lighting and technology to deliver the artistic value of the artwork to the audiences and will be part of the outreach team of the Alianza Dominicana Cultural center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop working relationships with artists, local schools and have experience in curating exhibits for the young audience
  • Work with artists and staff to produce the value chain comprising of exhibit documentation, preservation, and dissemination
  • Will create effective links between the artists, audience and the community.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This part-time position will require evening and occasional Saturday hours to monitor after school and summer programs, and attend special events. Schedule may vary according to needs of the program.

  • Ability and patience to work with young people, recognizing their exuberance and juvenile behavior, particularly in group settings.
  • Remain in stationary position for long time, either working with cameras, computers or equipment.


Education and/or experience required:

  • BA or BFA in design/studio arts and/or other relevant education and experience in designing artwork layout for exhibitions and managing related aspects of visual arts programming.

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:

  • Good communications and organizational skills
  • Project management skills
  • Knowledge of industry standards and the ability to interpret the vision of the Cultural Center through high-quality arts programming and its execution
  • Hands-on, solutions-driven, independent and creative thinker
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to physically assist maintenance staff and artists, if necessary
