Why Pedro Martinez and Catholic Charities Joined the Dominican Day Parade

Marching, singing and handing out catchy give-aways, hundreds of staff and volunteers from our Catholic Charities Alianza Dominicana division that provides services for local youth joined the largest-ever Dominican Day Parade this past Sunday, August 9.

Nearly 8,000 Dominicans – and Dominicans for the day – lined NYC’s Sixth Avenue, waving the old red, white, and blue, colors of both the Dominican and U.S. flags.

This year’s Grand Marshall and baseball Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez, led the parade.  Actress Jessica Pimentel from the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” along with fellow famous and not-so-famous Dominicans joined in a celebration filled with Dominican music, food and pride.

Catholic Charities staff drew crowds on this 84-degree day with hand fans printed with contact info.  And they provided key social service assistance and referrals as well.
