July 16, 2019 -- what a night! America celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch that landed Mankind on the Moon, the temperature cooled into the 70s from a high of 91 degrees, and The Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8 -3 Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Just as memorable, the Charities of the Archdiocese of New York (CCNY) held a very special “Yankees Night” to celebrate providing over 100 years of service to the New York Community. It seemed as though the entire city was packed into Yankee Stadium with 40,401 attendees to witness this exciting game. Catholic Charities gave out 500 tickets to affiliated agencies, staff, volunteers, donors and clients that are served.

Eddie Silverio, Director for Catholic Charities Alianza Dominicana had this to say, "It was a great opportunity to have two of our young men stand out on the field with Monsignor Sullivan and Beatriz Tavarez-Diaz. Their piers then wanted a chance to stand out there next year and asked me how they can get picked. It creates opportunity for them. I really enjoyed the natural sense of being part of a team. The program participants got to meet other participants of Alianza Dominicana whom we help, but they also met the people who work to provide them with the opportunities they’re given. It brings Alianza Dominicana and Catholic Charities together as a family and gives these young men and women a sense of belonging. Many of our participants can’t afford Yankee tickets in those sections, so everyone was happy and having fun."

A spotlight was put on Msgr. Sullivan and Catholic Charities’ team, honoring them as a valuable partner in helping the community. The affiliated agencies that were in attendance included Abraham House, Alianza Youth Services, Cardinal McCloskey Community Services, Casita Maria Inc, Big’s & Little’s NYC Mentoring, Catholic Guardian Services, Covenant House, Create Inc., Grace Institute, Incarnation Children’s Center, and Nazareth Housing.

A big thank you to the New York Yankees for honoring Catholic Charities and the community, and for winning the game! And an even bigger thank you to all the hard-working people who make these agencies function to bring the Catholic Charities mission to the people of New York.
