Best Way to Ring in the Christmas Spirit

Confirmed - once again! – our Catholic Charities St. Nicholas Project Shopping Day is best way to ring in the Christmas spirit in New York. Clad in green Catholic Charities t-shirts and clutching holiday wish lists prepared by families we serve, hundreds of volunteers and staff dominated the White Plains K-mart on December 1st and practically took over Kmart in Astor Place last Saturday, December 8. All told, we shopped for 4,000 New Yorkers in need - grandmas and grandpas, moms and dad and little girls and boys.

We draw on Santa’s Workshop as our model to match the perfect gifts with families.

  • First, donor “elves” contribute funds.
  • Then case managers meet with families most in need, asking for family members’ coats, clothes and blanket sizes, favorite colors and, for children, favorite cartoon heroes.  Together, they make a list and check it twice.
  • Finally, at the Big Event, St. Nicholas Shopping Day, Catholic Charities NY volunteers and staff shop ‘till they drop. Cheered on by  fellow volunteers singing Christmas carols, they choose Power Rangers size 2T PJS for a little boy who said he loved them, a thick winter coat for a day laborer dad who waits on the corner in the winter cold with hopes of landing work, a down comforter for a mom whose heat flickers off in public housing and more.

A year-round initiative the St. Nicholas Project ensures New York’s most vulnerable families receive coats, hats, sweaters, blankets, and more each Christmas.

So ho, ho, ho and merry Christmas!

Together we keep hope alive this Christmas season and serve many more than we ever thought possible! Every $75 gift allows Catholic Charities to provide gifts of necessities for one individual during the holiday season.

Missed Shopping Day?  There is still time to make the holiday bright for a New Yorker in need.
