Shut the Borders or Boost Immigration Services? Check out this breaking news.

Battling screams to slam doors on desperate immigrants, Catholic Charities joined forces with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio to boost services for immigrants in New York.  Just yesterday, Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio announced plans at the National Immigrant Integration Conference held at the Downtown Brooklyn Marriott Hotel to team with Catholic Charities and a handful of fellow nonprofits to offer legal services and deploy “community navigators” to reach out to immigrants.  And today at the conference, Catholic Charities will offer a first-hand view of on-the-ground immigration reality as opposed to campaign hype.

“One of Catholic Charities' core commitments in New York is to welcome immigrants” says Catholic Charities Director of Immigrant Services Mario Russell “be they families seeking to reunify, refugees, the undocumented, or workers--in a way that upholds their dignity and recognizes the value they bring to our communities of work, of family, and of faith.”

Here at Catholic Charities we stand up for thousands of immigrants each year.  We help those who fled torture, poverty and oppression.  And we help those preyed on here by scams of false promises for legal status.  Raluca Oncioiu will represent Catholic Charities as she speaks today at the national immigration conference about our collaboration to protect immigrants from fraud through policy making, outreach, referral and prosecution.

Catholic Charities will also work to double down on the immigrant services just announced by Gov. Cuomo and Mayor De Blasio during this period that President Obama’s executive action to offer protections to immigrants is stalled in courts.

“This new initiative, developed in conjunction with the Mayor's Office for Immigrant Affairs,” Mr. Russell says, “will build on the professionalism, skill, and compassion that Catholic Charities brings to its service with immigrants and represents an exciting, new opportunity to expand on important work that is done in communities throughout New York City."
