Brian Winters Shares Why He Is Running the NYC Marathon with Team Catholic Charities

If you interviewed 100 NYC Marathon runners – and we have here at Catholic Charities – you would learn 100 different reasons why they run.  Some run primarily for the exercise.  Some run for the challenge.  Others run for the cause. From Brian Winters’ perspective, his run, it seems, was almost inevitable, an urge that flows through his veins thanks to his father, a fellow runner, and his aunt, a trustee and volunteer with Catholic Charities NY.  Let’s go straight to the source and  hear from Brian now:

By Brian Winters

Growing up, I can remember my dad going out on his daily runs around town in my hometown of Floral Park on Long Island.  He continues to do so.  Somewhere along the line his passion rubbed off on me.

Although never a competitive runner, I had always been an athlete at school.  I needed a way to fill that void now that my days were behind me.

I would say I “became a runner” shortly after I graduated from the University of Richmond in 2012.  Running was a great way to channel my energy and continue to challenge myself.

After cheering on several friends in past marathons, I decided 2018 was the year I would conquer the challenge myself.  I will first be participating in the New York City Triathlon on July 1st and then begin a structured marathon training program using that fitness base as a solid starting point.

I heard about the amazing work Catholic Charities of New York does from my aunt, Noreen Culhane, who serves on its Board of Trustees so I am very excited to represent Catholic Charities in the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon.

Catholic Charities of New York carries on the admirable mission of caring for the most vulnerable members of our society.  It is an honor to help support these endeavors by participating in the marathon as a member of Team Catholic Charities.  I look forward to the challenge of training and the opportunity to represent and fundraise for such a wonderful organization.
