Special Spanish Mass Honors People of Puerto Rico and Mexico

En Español

Archbishop of New York Timothy Cardinal Dolan, in prayerful solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico and Mexico who suffered devastating loss of life and a complete dismantling of infrastructure in the regions directly affected by recent natural disasters, will offer a Spanish-language Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 4 p.m.

  • The people of Puerto Rico are among the earliest Spanish-speaking communities settled in the Archdiocese of New York.  Meanwhile, the Mexican community has been among the fastest growing in recent decades.
  • This Mass offers New Yorkers the opportunity to join their Hispanic neighbors in community and prayer at this difficult time.

Three auxiliary bishops, each of whom served various Hispanic communities of the Archdiocese of New York, will concelebrate the Mass with Cardinal Dolan. They include:

  1. Bishop Peter Byrne, episcopal vicar of Dutchess, Putnam and Northern Westchester;
  2. Bishop John Jenik, episcopal vicar of the Bronx, North Manhattan and Central Harlem and pastor of Our Lady of Refuge parish in the Bronx
  3. Bishop Gerald Walsh, vicar for clergy

Reverend Eric Cruz, a native New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent, will deliver the homily.  Rev. Cruz serves as pastor of St. John Chrysostom parish and director of Catholic Charities in the Bronx.

  • Kindly note, a second collection will be taken at the Mass to aid victims of the natural disasters in Mexico and Puerto Rico
