Inside Scoop from Those with Vision Impairments

No better time than today, "Blind Americans Equality Day" and this month, "World Blindness Awareness Month," to learn how to protect your vision.

The bad – actually terrifying – news is that here in the U.S. one person goes blind every minute!

The good news is that 80% of blindness is preventable.

How? Follow these simple steps:

1.  Get an annual eye exam

  • Most health insurance covers basic eye exams every 24 months
  • Most vision plans cover annual eye exams

2. Protect our sons and daughters:

  • 1 out of every 4 children has vision problems!
  • Many go unnoticed without full screening from a qualified professional
  • Eye exams can begin as early as age 6 months
  • They are important to detect and prevent vision loss and protect eye health
  • Since 80% of learning is said to be visual, eye exams can make the difference between a child’s success and failure in school

3. Prevent eye injuries

Blind American’s Equality Day, originally proclaimed “White Cane Safety Day” by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964, celebrates the achievements of those who are blind or visually impaired.

Catholic Charities Guild for the Blind’s specialized programs remove barriers, create solutions and expand possibilities so people with vision loss can achieve their full potential.

Our professional instructors are seen throughout NYC and the Hudson Valley in all neighborhoods and weather teaching individuals how to cross streets, use public transportation, move about safely in their homes and gain skills they need to work and live independently.

Please join with us in celebrating the achievements of those with visual impairments.
