Pray. Pray Hard

Team Catholic Charities NY runner Eric Wandrey trains for the TCS NYC Marathon

When it comes to tips and tricks from our Team Catholic Charities runners preparing the TCS New York City Marathon a few suggestions consistently come up:  Train. Train more. And pray. Pray hard.

Let’s get the inside scoop straight from today’s blogger and marathon runner, the future “Father” Eric Wandrey.

By Eric Wandrey

I am currently studying theology to be a priest for the Archdiocese of New York with three years to go before my ordination.

My running motto is taken from the St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I like to repeat it to myself during my long runs to keep myself motivated, a habit that I started when I ran the KeyBank  Vermont City Marathon in May of 2011. It was my first marathon and I managed to finish in 4 hours and 13 minutes.

I was at mile 22, and I had hit the wall so hard that I was not sure if I could finish. Someone ran by me wearing an orange shirt, the back of which had the quote from St. Paul. I started repeating the verse to myself as a prayer, and I found the last bit of mental energy that I needed to complete the race.

Now I am running four times a week: 2 short runs, a medium run, and a long run. I am training to run the marathon with a 9-minute/mile pace. My longest training run to date is 16 miles. My longest run before the marathon will be 20 miles. I hope to beat my Virginia marathon time in the upcoming NYC marathon.

Moreover, I am excited to be helping to raise money to clothe needy New Yorkers for the winter. The Catholic Church is coming to the end of the Year of Mercy, during which Pope Francis has encouraged us to practice the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, bury the dead, visit the imprisoned, and clothe the needy. I am glad that I can use this marathon to help do one of these works.

Team Catholic Charities helps raise funds for Catholic Charities St. Nicholas project that provides clothes and necessities to New Yorkers in need.

Root and pray for Eric and Team Catholic Charities NY in the TCS NYC Marathon.
