Banding Together to Beat the DACA Deadline

Catholic Charities Immigration Legal services is kicking off DACA Day of Action today, September 25, 2017, to help eligible DACA recipients renew their applications before the October 5 deadline.

The morning began with thanks to Catholic Charities’ legal services staff from immigration leaders. Speakers attending the event at our Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services office on 80 Maiden Lane in New York City  included Steve Banks, Commissioner, HRA New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services (HRA) and Bitta Mostofi, Acting Commissioner, Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA).

Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Sullivan, while gratefully acknowledging these accolades, turned the conversation to what we are now doing to help.  Today, for example, on this DACA Day of Action, close to a dozen legal service providers are offering  free application renewal assistance for DACA recipients whose cards expire before March 2018.  Free immigration legal consultations for DACA recipients will also be provided.

There are already 26 appointments scheduled.  This clinic is but one example of the critical work Catholic Charities is providing across the five boroughs, with support from the City, and the importance of connecting Dreamers with legal services ahead of the October 5 renewal deadline.

That’s right. The DACA renewal deadline is just a week away, October, 5, 2017.

So if your DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) immigration status expires between 9/5/17 -3/15/18 YOU MUST RENEW NOW!

Take advantage of our free, confidential  legal clinics by following these 6 simple steps:

1. Attend a free DACA renewal event

  • 9/25 – Catholic Charities (Manhattan) 80 Maiden Lane, 13th floor, NYC 10038
  • 9/25 – Bronx Community College Bronx Community College, 2155 University Ave., Bronx 10453
  • 9/28 – Legal Aid Society (Manhattan) Email dream@legal-aid.org for an appointment
  • 9/29 – Catholic Charities (Brewster)   175 Main St., Brewster 10509

2. Why?

  • To get help if you qualify to renew your DACA status to do so before the October 5th deadline
  • Receive legal evaluations for DACAmented persons to inform them of any options they may have to fix their immigration status

3. Who can attend?

  • Events are primarily for DACAmented, especially those who need or want help renewing their DACA status
  • However, some locations will also be providing legal screenings for people who do not have DACA
  • If you are not DACAmented and want a legal screening ask when making the appointment if the location is serving DACAmented only or the general public

4. Do you need to make an appointment or can they just show up to an event?

  • You MUST make an appointment
  • Call 800-354-0365 to schedule an appointment at any of the listed events or call 311 and say “ActionNYC”

5. What should you bring?

  • 2 Passport photos
  • $495 in check or money order
  • Current work authorization card
  • Approval notices for most recent DACA application
  • Any home or mailing addresses since last application
  • Certified court dispositions and any immigration related documents

6. NOTE: While our clinics and advice are free, a DACA renewal application is NOT free. So if you do not have enough money to pay the renewal fee:

  • Share this information when making your appointments. Many organizations are providing money assistance for the renewal fees, but it helps them better prepare if they know someone will be needing money in advance
  • Catholic Charities will provide money assistance for renewals completed at our events

7. Here are more links for help with paying the DACA renewal fee:

New York City residents
