Feeding New York’s Hungry

Toting bags freshly stuffed today, Holy Thursday, with fruits, beans, meat and their favorite foods, more than 100 families and single folks who may otherwise have gone hungry are now ready to celebrate Easter feasts thanks to Catholic Charities NY’s annual food distribution. The event was held this year at the Washington Heights Ecumenical food pantry inside Saint Rose of Lima Church on West 165th Street.  The pop-up pantry brings fresh food once a week to this struggling community.  It represents one of Catholic Charities NY’s many client-choice pantries that allows those we serve to pick the foods their families prefer.

His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan attended once again, sharing his signature hugs with toddlers and old folks alike. The event marked the culmination of Cardinal Dolan’s Easter season visits with Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Kevin Sullivan to New Yorkers in need.

This special day also marks Goya Foods’ recommitment to team with Catholic Charities to feed New York’s hungry.  As detailed in a recent press release, Goya plans this year to donate 300,000 pounds of food that will provide nearly 500,000 meals to New Yorkers in need. Since 2013, Goya Foods has been a generous supporter of the Catholic Charities’ food pantries, donating over 1.5 million pounds of food to Catholic Charities of New York since the start of their support.

The annual Holy Thursday food distribution with Goya reaffirms Catholic Charities’ partnerships with programs to provide more than 4 million meals to hungry New Yorkers. Community and parish-based food programs and pantries offer non-perishable food for families to bring home, while many locations also provide hot meals on site.

Last year, Catholic Charities received 600,000 pounds of food, half of which Goya donated, translating to nearly 1 million meals re-distributed through our partner programs.
