His Excellency, the Most. Rev. Robert O. Gonzalez-Nieves, OFM, the Archbishop of San Juan, will be the celebrant and homilist of the Mass of Solidarity with Puerto Rico on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020 at 4:00 p.m., at the Church of St. Raymond’s in the Bronx. A special commemoration will be given for the people of Puerto Rico, and their relatives in the archdiocese, who are currently suffering the effects of the recent earthquakes.

Remembering that Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria… “The earthquakes have not only shaken the earth and our relatives’ lives there, they have also shaken our very hearts here,” said Father Eric Cruz, the regional coordinator of Catholic Charities for the Bronx, whose relatives reside in Guanica, near the quakes’ epicenter. “The Mass is the wellspring of peace and healing. God calls us to speak openly and emotionally with Him, to experience His love and consolation. In one voice we will express our hope and our faith in Him that the ‘Isla del Encanto’ (‘Island of Enchantment’) will rise. Prayer, serenity, solidarity and charity are important. We are one family!”

Walking in peace and solidarity with its sister agency, Caritas de Puerto Rico (Catholic Charities of Puerto Rico), and the communities of Puerto Rico, is Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. Nearly 2 million Puerto Ricans call New York State their home. The vast majority of these 2 million are so deeply integrated and interwoven into the fabric of this State including the parishes, schools, Catholic Charities, and institutions of higher learning (with campuses on the island and in NYC), such as Hostos Community and Boricua colleges, established by Puerto Rican leaders here in the city.

Joining Archbishop Gonzalez as concelebrants of the Mass will be Bishop Gerald Walsh and Bishop Peter Byrne, both auxiliary bishops of New York, Msgr. Kevin Sullivan and Fr. Eric Cruz. A special message from His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan will be read to the Mass congregants.

St. Raymond’s Parish is located at 1759 Castle Hill Ave. Bronx, NY 10472.
