"It’s a great time to be together with the family," Rigoberto Gutierrez said.
The Gutierrez family couldn't be more grateful.
"Yeah they [my kids] are having fun," he smiled.
On this night, along with about one hundred others, they are sitting down to a hot dinner.
“It tastes very good!” Gutierrez's son smiled.
For some, it's a treat. For others, it's a meal they may never have had.
"Some of the people, maybe they don’t have food in the house," Gutierrez explained. “Thanks to the people right here, we all have something to eat."
Family, friends and face paint filled the room.
"What would you like?" the face painter asked a child. "Batman!" he exclaimed.
"We provide help and hope regardless of religion, race, ethnicity," Esmeralda Hoscoy, Westchester County Regional Supervisor of Catholic Charities Community Services, said. "We help you when you are most in need.”
That's the message of Catholic Charities and the people here are all part of its Obreros Unidos de Yonkers, or United Workers/Day Laborers of Yonkers.
“This group is such a wonderful group of men and women who really contribute back to the community," Hoscoy described. "Whenever there is a need they step up, even a couple years ago they help support in the Sandy efforts, by helping rebuild homes."
And this group was chosen for quite the honor earlier this year. They were asked to help build the Chair for Pope Francis's visit to New York City. Plus, to embroider the linens for the altar at Madison Square Garden.
“What was that like when you got that call?" I asked Hoscoy. "It was shocking first to here he was coming to America then it was more shocking to find out he was going to recognize the people we serve," she responded with a smile.
But this non-profit is about supporting those in need in all aspects of life. Especially when it comes to healthcare.
"Fidelis [Care] is one of our strongest partners," Hoscoy explained. “Together we are able to help individual really obtain self sufficiency."
“You’re right here in the middle of the community that’s where your office is located, why is that?" I asked George Rodriguez, Fidelis Care director of marketing. "Well, if you’re part of the community of yonkers you know S. Broadway is the place to be, that’s why we’re here, as a way to become a resource for the community," he explained.
Fidelis Care is a non-profit health insurance company that was created in 1993.
"We were founded by the Bishops of New York and now we’re in 62 counties," he said.
George Rodriguez, a native New Yorker, has devoted 11 years to this organization.
"It’s very rewarding, going into people’s homes and trying to get the individuals covered," he explained. "Then having those individuals come back and thanking me and seeing the faces of their children who now have coverage."
It's events like the one here at a church in Yonkers, which Fidelis Care and Catholic Charities host year round, that truly show the impact giving back has on so many lives.
"It means that everyone can have great food!" Gutierrez's son smiled. "Thank you!"
