CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF NEW YORK TO JOIN RALLY HOSTED BY MAYOR DE BLASIO’S CENTER FOR FAITH & COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

IN SUPPORT OF DACA AT CITY HALL 5:00 PM

Today at 5:00pm at the steps of City Hall, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, will join the leaders of Mayor de Blasio’s Center for Faith & Community Partnerships (CFCP) for a rally urging congress to pass The DREAM Act, in light of President Trump’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

 

Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of New York has issued the following statement: “We deeply regret the President’s decision to rescind the DACA program and initiate steps to end the program without any replacement. Catholic Charities remains steadfast in our solidarity with the 800,000 “Dreamers,” who face even more uncertainty and threat.  We recognize the six-month wind down period provides an imperative for us to act quickly.  We urgently call upon the President to support and Congress to promptly pass legislation that will protect and provide opportunities for these “Dreamers.”  We will work with any and all to achieve this goal.”

For over a century, Catholic Charities has been a leader welcoming and integrating immigrants and refugees, and has assisted in over 800 DACA applications to date. Catholic Charities helps immigrants reunite legally with their families, obtain proper work authorization, learn English and civics, and prepare to pass citizenship exams. Catholic Charities also assists immigrants avoid exploitation by unscrupulous practitioners by providing correct information and realistic counsel about immigration status.

Beginning tonight, The NYS New Americans Hotline (800-566-7636), a statewide information and referral hotline operated by Catholic Charities, will be assisting in all DACA related matters. The hotline provides timely and accurate information in more than 200 languages.
