A Night to Remember

Oh, what a night!  The Yankees trounced the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 even after the Reds’ heartbreaking second inning triple play with Yankees’ bases loaded.

Best of all for us at Catholic Charities, our hometown heroes hosted Catholic Charities Day at Yankee Stadium to honor our 100 years of service to New York. The fans went wild before the game began when Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, Board Chair Catherine Kinney, Board Member William Frank and Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred were called down to the field.  In fairness, the fans’ enthusiasm was due, at least in part, to our having packed the stands.  The Yankees gave us 1,500 tickets to this special game that we shared with 25 of our affiliated agencies, staff, volunteers, donors and more than 500 of the clients we serve.

So when the spotlight illuminated Msgr. Sullivan and team, honoring Catholic Charities as “a valuable partner in building the fabric of a caring New York that seeks to lend a hand to neighbors in need, ” the crowd broke out in cheers.

Then, under dark, threatening skies, the Yankees gave it all they got.  Yankee pitcher Jordan Montgomery didn’t give up a single hit for the first five innings, more than pulling his weight towards the Reds’ ultimate defeat.

Our 10 Yankee ticket winners plus guests, enjoying their great seats near the outfield, had a lot to say about the night.  We ran the contest to poll our blog readers about what news of ours interests them most and reward them for their loyalty.  And this was one loyal bunch!

“Catholic Charities is doing great things,” said Kimberly, a Deloitte employee and regular volunteer at Catholic Charities. “I researched a lot of organizations before deciding Catholic Charities was the best place to donate my time.”

Thanks, Kimberly! Thanks Catholic Charities supporters!  And thanks, most of all, to the Yankees for honoring Catholic Charities 100 years of service by winning the game!
