New York’s hungry not only need food; they need a place to eat it. Think about it; if you can’t afford to buy a burger, you can’t afford to buy furniture.  But now, thanks to Empire Resorts’ free donation and teamwork with Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan, 56 families in need can only get not only food from our food pantries but can also eat it with their families on their own kitchen tables and chairs.

This all started when Empire Resorts, renovating their Raceway buffet area, realized they had 66 perfectly good tables and 117 good chairs they could no longer use.  Long a patron of Catholic Charities, they not only offered but also delivered the furniture to us to share with those we serve through our Catholic Charities Resource Exchange.

“For many of us, sitting down at the kitchen table to share a meal as a family is something we take for granted,” says Ali Curtis, Director of Catholic Charities Resource Exchange. “But for those struggling to make ends meet this isn’t always the case. Thanks to Empire Resorts, the recipients of the furniture are able to enjoy the simple pleasure of dining together.

Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan serves the homeless, the hungry, the emotionally and physically handicapped, immigrants, and the marginalized and vulnerable of Orange and Sullivan Counties.

This donation along with similar generous community support enables Catholic Charities Resource Exchange to distribute gently used furniture, household items, non-perishable food, hygiene items, school supplies, and other basic household items to those who would otherwise go without.

“We’re so glad that the furniture found good homes,” says Shawn Wiles, Executive Director of Racing & Facilities at Monticello Casino & Raceway.
