Sets Students Up for Success

Children from families facing homelessness and hunger can hold their heads high when they start school next week thanks to back-to-school bashes Catholic Charities helped sponsor throughout the New York archdiocese.

Already  we are empowering their families with secure housing, food and training to live independently.  And now we’re giving children the book bags, school supplies, haircuts and more and back-to-school bashes filled with free food, music, face painting and more.

Catholic Charities joined forces with NYC Councilman Salamanca and NYC 41st Precinct police to distribute 1,200 free book bags packed with school supplies!  As the children treasured their gifts, built balloon art and devoured ice cream cones their parents received practical help from Catholic Charities and fellow community-based organizations.

Catholic Charities’ Homebase program helped throw back-to-school bash.

Catholic Charities Homebase programs help families and single adults who are in rent arrears and in danger of becoming homeless by addressing the multiple and complex issues that are the root causes of financial instability and crisis. Catholic Charities is dedicated to strengthening families and resolving crisis through comprehensive case management, financial counseling, tenant eviction prevention workshops, employment services, and advocacy.

New York City Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr. and Catholic Charities Executive Director Msgr. Kevin Sullivan attended the event, met with some of the children and parents we serve and reveled in the day’s happiness.

"This is what it is all about - helping our kids prepare for school with the supplies they need,” the NYC Councilman said.
